Mitch Marsh in mourning after the death of grandfather Ross as Cricket World Cup return for Australia beckons

Mitch Marsh will make an imminent return to the Cricket World Cup in India after flying home to Perth to be with his family.

A member of one of Australian cricket’s most famous families, the 32-year-old is in mourning following the death of his grandfather Ross on Friday.

Marsh had played every match of Australia’s World Cup campaign before taking leave from Saturday’s victory over England in India.

Cricket Australia has since confirmed Marsh will fly back to India in time for Tuesday’s clash with Afghanistan.

Such was Ross’s impact on the Marsh family that his name has been handed down twice.

Mitch and his nephew Austin, the son of ex-Test batter Shaun, were both given Ross as their middle name at birth.

Mitch and brother Shaun, who won the Ashes together in 2017-18, are the sons of former Test batter and World Cup winner Geoff.

Geoff’s father Ted died in 2008 just days before Shaun was called up for a Test tour of India.

“It’s been a tough week for the family but I’m looking forward to getting over there and, hopefully, if I get a game, I’ll be able to do it for Pop,” Shaun said at the time.

“I gave Dad a call. He’s pretty happy. He’s had a tough few days so hopefully it lifts him up a little bit.”

This week, Mitch promised his teammates that he would be back “to win this World Cup” after spending time with his family following the death of grandfather Ross.

“He’s doing the right thing, and he’s getting home, and he’s seeing the people he needs to see,” close friend and teammate Marcus Stoinis said on Friday.

“I don’t think there’s a timeline on when he’s coming back, but I’m sure he’ll do what he needs to do at home, and then get back.

“And he sent a message last night saying ‘I’ll be home for a little bit, and then I’m coming back to win this World Cup’. So that speaks to his mindset.”
