Michael Clarke cops another Noosa joke during Cricket Australia Awards

Michael Clarke cops another Noosa joke during Cricket Australia Awards

Read Time:2 Minute, 47 Second

It seems Michael Clarke will never shake that Noosa incident with Karl Stefanovic and former partner Jade Yarbrough in early 2023.

The former Australian men’s cricket captain was again the butt of a Noosa joke on Wednesday night, this time in front of a packed Crown Palladium for the Cricket Australia Awards.

The Grade Cricketer co-hosts Sam Perry and Ian Higgins were drafted in to Channel 7’s coverage of Australian cricket’s night of nights to inject some humour and life into the night.

And while Mitch Marsh’s acceptance speech after being named the Allan Border medallist had indisputable claims to earning the biggest laughs of the night, the boys from The Grade Cricketer were a close second.

Higgins couldn’t help but open up old wounds at Clarke’s expense when interviewing Steve Smith, who was one of three nominees for the coveted award that Marsh eventually took out.

“Steve Smith, you’ve won this award four times. Only Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke have the same amount,” Higgins said on the mic.

“This year, the winner actually gets a trip to Noosa with Karl Stefanovic, that’s exciting.”

The crowd erupted in laughter, including current men’s skipper Pat Cummins, whose reaction was priceless, but Smith could muster nothing more than an awkward smile.

Perry was just as sharp while questioning eventual Belinda Clark medallist Ashleigh Gardner.

“Even though the team has owned every trophy, the ICC snubbed all of you for individual awards a couple of weeks ago,” Perry started.

“What does the ICC have against you guys and, separately, how are you going to sustain your excellence despite this petty snubbing?”

Gardner laughed: “That’s a tough one. I think because it’s voted by the public maybe there’s some influence from around the world where Aussies clearly aren’t voting.

“But I don’t know, I don’t have an answer to that.”

Satisfied he got what he wanted from Gardner, Perry finished with a cheeky grin: “Your words, not mine”.

Speaking to another Belinda Clark medal nominee, Annabel Sutherland, the younger sister of Victorian men’s captain Will, Perry was at it again.

“You made the Australian team at age 20, you have a Commonwealth Games gold medal to your name, you have scored a maiden hundred at Trent Bridge, you’ve got franchise contracts in India,” Perry said, building up to the punchline, inevitably going to be at the expense of her brother, who is yet to make his international debut.

“Just on behalf of younger siblings to everybody across the world, how satisfying is it to achieve your career goals, well before your elder brother?”

Sutherland was too modest to give a proper answer, fumbling her way through a couple of words through laughter, before Perry put her out of her misery and threw back to the night’s hosts.
