David Warner claps back at Cricket World Cup retirement claim: ‘Who said I’m finished?’

Read Time:3 Minute, 36 Second

Much has been made of David Warner’s looming farewell to Test cricket this summer after the Australian opener held on to his spot and helped retain the Ashes in England.

And now the World Cup triumph has given him the perfect opportunity to bow out of ODI cricket on top.

But even at 37 years old it appears he’s not quite ready to say goodbye, instead soaking up every moment of glory and declaring he might just play into his 40s.

Warner donned all of his recent medals for Australia’s post-match celebrations on Sunday and Monday, pairing his newest memento with medals from the 2021 T20 World Cup and 2023 World Test Championship victories.

If that hinted at a retirement, though, his caption left fans with no doubt about his intentions.

Australian hero snubbed in World Cup team of the tournament

“Chuffed to walk away as winners and six-time champions,” he wrote.

“Our whole team should be extremely proud.

“Thanks again everyone, see you in 2027.”

Warner will turn 41 during the 2027 World Cup set to be hosted by the West Indies and USA.

Selection there would make history, too, by bringing him level with Ricky Ponting on four World Cup appearances for Australia.

But in the eyes of some it might be a bridge too far.

ESPNcricinfo figured as much, highlighting Warner’s considerable record on Monday to mark what the website tagged as the end of his ODI World Cup career.

Warner had other ideas.

“Who said I’m finished??” he wrote.

Indeed, the batter has a history of proving people wrong.

He had a campaign to forget in the 2021 Indian Premier League, dumped as captain and then dropped from his team entirely.

Yet when the T20 World Cup came around he starred for Australia, top-scoring in group wins over Sri Lanka and the West Indies and the semi-final victory over Pakistan.

Warner then put Australia on the path to victory over New Zealand in the final when he scored 53 in the successful chase.

Two years on, and there’s still no end in sight as the white-ball dynamo eyes off Australia’s T20 and ODI World Cup title defences in 2024 and 2027 respectively.

He might not be alone either.

Pat Cummins is well within range of entering the 2027 World Cup as a 34-year-old captain and leading paceman.

“Maybe because we won, but I did fall in love with ODI again this World Cup,” the skipper said, speaking on the future of the 50-over format.

“I think the scenario where every game really matters, it does mean a bit different to just a bilateral (series). The World Cup’s got such rich history, I’m sure it’s going to be around for a long time.

“Yeah, there’s so many wonderful games, so many wonderful stories within this last couple of months. So, I think there’s definitely a place (for ODI cricket).”

Such was Cummins’ reverence for the ODI triumph that he rated it Australia’s best achievement of the year, ahead of retaining the Ashes in England and winning the World Test Championship.

“The World Test Championship was huge,” he said.

“But an ODI World Cup, it’s the rich history I think, and to come over to a place like India where the conditions are so different to back home.

“It’s pretty gruelling, 11 games in five or six weeks, but the way the group stuck together and got through it holding the medal, that’s the pinnacle.”
