Aussie cricket great Mark Waugh rages as West Indies batter Roston Chase makes mockery of trial rule

Read Time:3 Minute, 20 Second

There were farcical scenes during Australia’s ODI clash with the West Indies on Friday at the MCG that made a mockery of a new trial rule.

In fact, Australian cricket great Mark Waugh was so incensed by what he saw he called for dramatic change and a penalty for batting teams.

For the first time on Australian soil the ‘shot clock’ rule was in action, a concept brought in by the International Cricket Council to make sure bowling teams are on their toes and to keep them racing through the overs.

It is not uncommon for teams to be fined for a slow over rates in games.

The rule allows a bowling team only 60 seconds to be ready to bowl after the last ball of the previous over.

There is a five-run penalty if the rule is breached three times in an innings.

Also, if the bowling team has not finished the 50 overs within 210 minutes, they are forced to bowl the remaining overs with an extra fielder in the inner circle.

But on Friday, that was not an issue for the new-look Australian team who made light work (they won with 69 balls to spare) of an even more unrecognisable and, indeed, decimated West Indies unit.

The problem was in fact with the West Indies.

The Windies managed just 231 on a good batting wicket, with captain Shai Hope later admitting they needed at least 300 for a competitive score.

They were in all sorts of trouble, too, but Keacy Carty (88) and Roston Chase (59) put on a 110-run fifth-wicket stand to avoid total embarrassment.

However, during Roston’s inning there were all sorts of delays as Roston had multiple checks of equipment and ‘the sub’ appearing on the field several times.

Waugh eventually erupted at the end of the 24th over when Australia was again ready but the batters were holding up play.

“Here you are … you’ve got the batsmen holding up the game now,” Waugh said, who was commentating on Fox.

And the sub was back on the field after the 27th over.

“(I’m) definitely bringing in a fine for the batting team,” Waugh again fumed.

“Roston Chase, he’s got the sub out there again. Not sure if he’s got a headache or needs to change his gloves again or whatever.

“The umpire’s just wandered over, Xavier Bartlett’s ready to bowl, no batsman ready to go.

“I saw the umpire have a word to Roston Chase but at the end of the day he’s fiddling around like an old chook again.

“Give him a seat to sit in.”

The same thing happened at the end of the 28th over with the staff running onto the field with bats but this time umpires appeared to send them away.

“This is a joke. This is the third time they’ve been out in three overs,” Waugh said.

“The sooner we can bring in the penalty to the batsmen, the better … Not just the fielding team.”

The slowness of batting is rarely considered an issue but according to Flashscore Cricket Commentators there is a rule in place for the batting team to be penalised as well.

“If the batting side is found to be wasting time under this shot clock trial, the match referee can deduct time from their allotted time when it’s their turn to field,” they said on social media.

“Obviously doesn’t work if they’re batting second but that’s how they deal with it.”
